Fraxinus excelsior
Common Ash, European Ash. Small.
Tree with a single trunk up to 40 m in height, with a greenish-grey bark, deeply fissured with age. The pale brown fruits or 'keys', which blow away in the wind, consist of a single seed surrounded by a wing.
Native to Europe, from northern Spain to Russia, and from Southern Scandinavia to northern Greece. Also considered native in southwestern Asia. Widely cultivated and naturalized in New Zealand, the United States and Canada.
It is found very commonly in woods and hedgerows, especially on lime-rich and heavy soils. Frequently used in gardens, parks, and streets.
